Without warning, the door opened, and I fell forward, stumbling right into KC’s arms. “Nari?” He looked down at me with confusion and worry. “Are you all right?”

“Me? What about you? I texted you at lunch and you didn’t answer. I also called you on the way home.”

He took the headphones off his head. “Oh, sorry about that. I didn’t hear my phone.”

“Oh.” I felt like an idiot for worrying. I tried to cover up my embarrassment. “So you got some work done, then?”

“More than I have in a long time,” he said with a smile. “I haven’t had a day in the studio like this since before the tour.” His stomach growled loudly, and he laughed.

“So you didn’t have lunch,” I said with a sigh. I took hold of his wrist. “C’mon then, you need to eat and take the meds Dr. Shin ordered. After that, you need to take a swim. Dr. Shin said your muscles need to have some exercise, but don’t overdo it.”

“Hold on,” he said, pulling away. “Let me finish this verse. Thirty minutes, I promise. Then I’ll eat.”

“Is this how it feels to be one of the members?” I asked, rolling my eyes. “I heard all the stories about how notoriously hard it is to get you out of the studio when you’re on a streak.”

“You’d have to ask them,” he said, face losing all its happy glow. “Or you could, if you could talk to them.”

“I’m sure they’ll call.”

“Yeah. Right.” He put the headphones back on, obviously done discussing the subject. He sat down at the mixing board, and I moved closer, moving the headphones off his ear.

“Thirty minutes,” I said, pointing to the time. “If you’re here a minute longer, I’ll be back to get you and you won’t like it.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Good.” I closed the studio door and then looked at my phone. There was something important I had to do.

I went into my bedroom and closed the door, sitting on the edge of my bed before dialing the phone. Not many people knew I had this number, and I’d promised I’d keep it quiet that I had it, but now I was glad I did. I’d actually forgotten I had it until now. The phone rang a few times before a woman answered.

“Hello?”

“Hello?” I moved the phone from my ear and checked the number. “Is this Ye-Jun’s phone?”

“Who’s calling?”

I didn’t recognize the woman’s voice, but I assumed that it was safe to say who I was. “My name is Kim Nari, and I work for SBE.”

“Oh!” Her voice perked up. “I’ve heard that name before. Hang on!”

I sat there and stared at the phone, wondering who this strange — and obviously American — woman was on the other end of the phone. I could hear mumbling, and I knew that whoever she was, she was spending the night because it was the middle of the night in Korea.

After a few seconds, another voice said, “Hello?”

This was a voice I recognized. “Ye-Jun, it’s Kim Nari.
